Kurdish Iraq Spring 2014 – Now Booking

In the Kurdish north of Iraq,  a stable security situation has led to a high level of economic and business development.  British-Kurdish relations are strong and British education has an excellent reputation for  the high quality of its university system, research, teaching and training.  Many government and industry leaders were educated in the UK.

Following more excellent events in 2013, will be returning to Sulaymaniyah, a vibrant commercial city in the east of the region, and home to the Univeristy of Sulaymaniyah. We will then head to Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan and one of the oldest continually-inhabited cities in the world. As well as the University of Salahaddin, there are several public and private universities in Erbil and surrounding cities.

The Human Capacity Development Program in Higher Education (HCDP) is an ambitious program that aims to develop human capacities in Kurdistan Region in the field of higher education. An annual KRG budget of one hundred and twenty billion dinars (GBP62 million) is allocated to the scheme. It provides an opportunity for thousands of distinguished young men and women to continue their education in internationally renowned universities.

Up to 2000 students will be sponsored to study abroad in 2013/14. Furthermore, the Iraq Education Initiative scholarship programme, run by the Iraqi government in Baghdad, aims to send 10,000 PG students abroad every year until 2015.

Iraq Education Summit Dubai 2013

 Iraq Education & Technology Summit (IETS) 
 23-24 February 2013, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dubai, UAE


Following on from our successful UK HE events in northern Iraq over the past 2 years, Levant Education is working in partnership with CWI Summits and Iraq Prosperity, to assist the Iraqi government in rebuilding education capacity and education levels, and to bring new opportunities for UK universities working in Iraq.

We are pleased to announce that the Iraq Education and Technology Summit will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dubai, UAE, 23-24 February 2013. The summit is supported by the Iraq Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Iraq delegation will be led by HE Ali Al-Adeeb, Iraq Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research. (A similar event took place last February, in New York).

A central pillar of Iraqi Government strategy under the new Infrastructure Law, which is being passed by Iraqi Parliament at the moment, is to form and strengthen relationships with leading international partners who can bring the highest level of education, technology, training and management skills to the country.

According to Iraq’s 2010-2014 National Development Plan, Iraq must mobilize $186 billion in investment – around $8 billion for education – create 3.5 million new jobs, and cut unemployment by half from 15 percent. Priority sectors include, among others, the education sector. Non-oil sector growth will be dependent on the reconstruction and development of decrepit infrastructure throughout the country. Scholarships for post-graduate education alone number 10,000 students per year.

The Iraqi official delegation will attend with an aim of meeting universities and companies who can offer practical and technological solutions to improve education capacity, education levels, education technology and innovation.

Iraq Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, HE Ali Al-Adeeb, will be accompanied by:

  • Deputy Minister, Scholarships and Cultural Relations Department 
  • Ministry of Education (Primary & Secondary)
  • Ministry of Science & Technology
  • Education Committee – Iraqi Parliament

UK Higher Education Delegation Workshop: The UK Higher Education delegation, led by Levant Education Group, will meet with Iraq Ministers, Deputies and Director Generals to review Iraqi initiatives for Higher Education, including the scholarship programme.

Private ministerial meetings: Meetings will be scheduled with Ministry officials. Deputies and Director Generals will attend with their plans for HE projects and requirements to discuss with the attending delegates.

The Ministries of Education and Higher Education are extremely keen to meet UK education providers who can fulfill the requirements of their most pertinent, funded projects, which include:

• Overseas education for Iraqi Students, especially at post-graduate level 

• Implementation of the Education Overall Plans and Projects 

• Establishing an Open and Distance Education System 

• New Universities, Campuses and Dormitories projects throughout Iraq 

• Libraries, Laboratories and Publishing of National Curriculum 

• Registration and Licensing of Foreign and Private Educational Institutions 

• Building Ministry of Education capacity 

• Specialised technology training for Ministry staff and teachers 

• Development of the Iraqi Virtual Science Library for scientists and lecturers 

• Development of computer literacy 

• Establishment of accredited training centres for programmers and IT students 

• Training of IT in education

Each ministry department has a set of priority assignments and will be using this official summit as a platform to determine the best partners and suppliers to work with. The summit will provide an essential forum for universities, schools and education providers interested in working with the Iraqi Ministry of Education.
