‘Brexit’ British unis lose out in Azerbaijan Scholarship programme

The government of Azerbaijan has announced a new postgraduate scholarship programme, to be jointly run under the administration of Azerbaijan Youth Foundation (Masters) and the Ministry of Education (PhD’s).

Levant Education have organised high level education exhibitions in Azerbaijan since 2012.

While this is good news for talented undergraduates aiming to continue their academic career abroad, the announcement is not all good news for foreign universities.

The UK, traditionally the favourite destination for Azerbaijani students, has seen the number of ‘approved’ universities reduced to just 11, compared to around 40 the last time the government ran a similar programme. The eleven universities approved to receive Azerbaijani sponsored students are:

1. Imperial College London 2. King’s College London 3. London School of Economics and Political Science 4. UCL 5. University of Bristol 6. University of Cambridge 7. University of Edinburgh 8. University of Glasgow 9. University of Manchester 10. University of Oxford 11. University of Warwick

Impending exit of the UK from the European Union, and the high cost of courses, will no doubt be factors to have affected the thinking of the Ministry, in this pro-European former Soviet state. European universities featured on the list include 44 from Germany, 32 from Italy and 21 from France.

Speaking from Baku, David Mitchell of Levent Education said, “The previous scholarship programme of the Ministry of Education enabled hundreds of talented young Azerbaijanis to achieve their academic ambitions abroad and return to begin their careers. The suspension of that programme saw numbers of students studying abroad plummet. We expect interest and applications to increase back to 2013 levels.”

I thought the event was very well run and the quality of the prospective students I met was mostly very high. There also seemed to be a good number of attendees.” Dan Newby, London School of Economics

There is a choice of exhibitions to attend in this excellent market for bright young students; we have been running successful exhibitions in Baku since 2012, finding the ideal balance between quantity of visitors and quality of enquiries.

On Friday 18th October we will be visiting the Ministry of Education to discuss the scholarship goals and parameters. We will also be visiting High Schools with a track record of preparing students for international Higher Education.

baku_workshop1

Thom Jones came into Baku to deliver his unique brand of entertaining, motivational and insightful training, supported by Levant Education local office Manager Khayala Pashayeva and local partner school Linguist.

Owner / Director of Linguist Language Training School Nazrin Mammadova said after the event, “The sessions were really interesting and really productive for local teachers. I received very positive feedback from the teachers and what is more we now have greater demand for a similar event in the future”.

The workshop covered intercultural communication and explored the themes of technology, resources, 21st century skills, ingrained responses, relevance and learner (and teacher) motivation.

XayalaKhayala Pashayeva lead a session on social media and the classroom, and subjects also included the ‘fallacy of the native speaker’ and preparing students for international language exams.

According to one of the trainees, an experienced teacher, “Thom was very interesting person who was able to encourage me to start a new teacher training course for next year. I really saw myself in him!”

Thanks to Thom, Khayala, Nazrin and sponsors Kings Education – a great collaboration in the service of teacher training and a launchpad for future events.

Total Recruitment – Baku Autumn 2017

This weekend Studybritish.com hosted a full programme of recruitment activities for high-end UK universities in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“Thanks for a good event – we can always rely on you guys to deliver! As we know it’s about being targeted and I was pleased with the type of visitors to the fair”.
Joanne Jacobs, University of Manchester.

In a challenging market all channels are important to maximise recruitment opportunities, and Studybritish.com (a division of Levant Education) aims for a ‘Total Recruitment’ performance, with marketing initiatives including high school visits, online and social media, alumni events and the exhibition, our 10th since 2012.

With concerns about the economy in Azerbaijan and falling recruitment numbers, it was rewarding to see that the strength and appeal of UK education endures.

Azerbaijan Mission Report October 2016

Leading UK universities, including London Schools of Economics & Political Science, Kings College London, Warwick University, Manchester University and University College London, joined the Studybritish.com HE exhibition in Baku last week.

sb_exhibit_oct16o

Despite fears of reduced demand due to the local economy, global oil prices and the suspension of the Ministry of Education scholarship, interest was strong and high achieving students remain attracted to studying  in the UK.

Applications from self-funded students for 2017 have started more strongly that last year, and there are hopes for a return of the state scholarship next year, focussed on PG courses in ministry identified subjects, and joint programmes held in both countries.

The exclusive Studybritish.com Alumni Reception again attracted a good number of UK university alumni, a vital source of university ‘ambassadors’ and referral enquiries for the future. University representatives were then treated to an evening of blues jazz at an exclusive restaurant, with the International Jazz Festival taking place in Baku.

The Studybritish.com HE Exhibition takes place in October and April every year, and was the first UK-focussed education event in Azerbaijan, developed with support from the FCO and UKTI. Since 2013 the British Council has offered a competing event, which helps their local sales of IELTS courses and tests, products that globally help the BC earn over £1 billion per year. In 2016 the BC were forced to issue an apology to Levant Education for unfair competitive exploitation of Levant’s cooperation with UKTI / FCO in 2011/12.

Last week top UK Universities returned to Baku with the Studybritish.com Education Tour, held at the JW Absheron Marriott Hotel on April 8 and 9.

Despite the devalued Manat and suspended Scholarship Programme, interest in studying in the UK was high and the exhibition was well attended. The group also visited ADA University, and on Friday evening a lively Alumni Reception was held, with over 70 UK Alumni attending.

Levant Education continues to be committed to Azerbaijan, working with universities on a variety of levels: networking, alumni events, recruitment events and market analysis. The majority of Levant’s clients use its services to improve brand awareness and direct recruitment, an increasingly important channel for university recruitment to the UK.

The Studybritish.com Exhibition and related events will return to Baku in October.

The Independent Complaints Body Verita will soon publish its report into the behaviour of the British Council in Azerbaijan in particular. Levant Education agreed cooperation with the British Council to launch UK-focussed events in Azerbaijan and Turkey in 2012, and paid UKTI for support services. The British Council then used that cooperation and support to launch a competing events, despite assurances of support and non-competition.
